Injury news: Central Coast Mariners star to have surgery

Mariners defender Storm Roux is stretchered off AAMI Park on Sunday.

Central Coast Mariners confirmed defender Storm Roux has suffered a fractured fibula and ligament disruption that will require surgery in Sydney today.

It came as a result of the incident that occurred during the club’s 4-1 loss to City at AAMI Park on Sunday.

Roux also sustained a dislocated shoulder that will be assessed later in the week.

At approximately the 58th minute, Roux landed awkwardly and it saw the New Zealand international stretchered from the pitch and taken to hospital.

Roux, 23, stayed in Melbourne overnight with club physiotherapist Andrew Nealon and will return to Sydney this morning for immediate surgery on this right leg.

Foxtel A-League All Stars in Wollongong

Josh Rose and Storm Roux will be part of the Foxtel A-League squad when they arrive in Wollongong tomorrow.

Josh Rose and Storm Roux will be part of the Foxtel A-League squad when they arrive at their Wollongong training base tomorrow.

Toppling the star-studded Juventus will be the focus when the Hyundai A-League’s best players – the Foxtel A-League All Stars – assemble for their training camp in Wollongong tomorrow (Friday) ahead of the August 10 clash with the Italian champions.

In preparation, Foxtel A-League All Stars and Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau will put the stars of the Hyundai A-League through a series of training sessions as well as a friendly against the Young Socceroos in Wollongong on Tuesday 5 August at WIN Stadium.

The Foxtel All Stars team includes Alessandro Del Piero, Thomas Broich, Besart Berisha and Gui Finkler while Juventus boats the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Gianluigi Buffon, Patrice Evra and recently crowned FIFA World Cup U21 player of the tournament Paul Pogba.

The Foxtel A-League All Stars players will also spend time in the community, visiting football clubs and schools in both Sydney and Wollongong, starting tomorrow morning (Friday) with a visit to the Mt Terry Public School in Albion Park on the NSW South Coast.

Sydney FC and All Stars striker Bernie Ibini will take part in the school clinic at Mt Terry Public School and be available for media interviews at the school before joining the rest of his team mates in camp in Wollongong at lunchtime.

Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri’s reign as Juventus coach is still awaiting its first win after the Italian champions were held to a 0-0 pre-season friendly draw with Cesena on Thursday (AEST).

In their last hit-out before heading off on their tour of Indonesia and Australia, the Bianconeri failed to reach any great heights against the newly-promoted Cesena.

Italian international Andrea Pirlo went closest to scoring in the first half, testing ‘keeper Nicola Leali with two efforts in the first 15 minutes.

But Juve struggled in attack without star striker Carlos Tevez, who had returned home after his father was kidnapped in Argentina. He has since been released and Tevez is expected to link up again with the squad for their tour.

Juventus head to Australia next week ahead of their highly-anticipated clash with the Foxtel All Stars at ANZ Stadium on August 10. Pirlo, Tevez, Paul Pogba, Patrice Evra, Gianluigi Buffon and Claudio Marchisio headline a star-studded squad to take on the Hyundai A-League’s best.

The FOXTEL A-League All Stars will meet Juventus at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on 10 August with the match to be broadcast live and exclusive on the Seven Network nationally.

Mark Birighitti, Storm Roux and Josh Rose have been added to the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad.

Mark Birighitti, Storm Roux and Josh Rose have been added to the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad.

Newcastle Jets goal keeper Mark Birighitti, Perth Glory midfielder Youssouf Hersi, Central Coast midfielder Nick Montgomery and Wellington Phoenix Manny Muscat are the final players to be added to the 2014 FOXTEL A-League All Stars squad for the upcoming match against Serie A champions Juventus at ANZ Stadium on Sunday 10 August 2014.

Great seats for the match are still available. Go to www.a-leagueallstars.com.au/tickets for details.

FOXTEL A-League All Stars Head Coach Josep Gombau believes that he now has a group of players that will be able to compete against the current Italian Serie A champions.

“I’m satisfied with the squad that we have to play against Juventus,” Gombau said. “It will be a great experience for all the players and coaches that are involved and I want everybody to enjoy this ‘football party’.”

“The most important part of the event for the players is to allow the fans to enjoy this fantastic game. Juventus is one of the best teams in the world at the moment. I want everybody to appreciate the opportunity we have and work hard every single minute they are on the field.

“I want to say thank you to FFA for bringing this match here to Australia and also to the fans for the support to myself and the players who have been selected.”

In addition to the finalisation of the FOXTEL A-League All Stars playing squad, Football Federation Australia today also confirmed the Coaching staff that will support Gombau for this historic match.

Central Coast Mariners Head Coach Phil Moss has been named as Gombau’s assistant coach with Peter Blazincic from Adelaide United as the goal keeper coach.

Moss is excited about the prospect of working with Gombau to prepare the FOXTEL A-League All Stars for their challenge against the Bianconeri.

“It’s a great honour to be hand-picked by Josep and FFA in this position for this historic match,” Moss said. “To be able to help prepare the best of the Hyundai A-League to face such an iconic club as Juventus was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“Personally, I want to learn as much as possible from my involvement with the FOXTEL A-League All Stars and then apply those learnings when I return to my club.

“I would also like to thank the Central Coast Mariners club and my players for their understanding to allow me to take this position and I will be repay their confidence by returning as a better coach as a result of my experience.”

The FOXTEL A-League All Stars will meet Juventus at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on 10 August with the match to be broadcast live and exclusive on the Seven Network nationally.

Juventus in the eye of Storm Roux

Roux has been named in the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad.

From being club-less this time last year to going head-to-head with the likes of new Juventus signing Patrice Evra, it’s been some rise for newly named Foxtel All-Stars defender Storm Roux.

The 21-year-old admits he’s still pinching himself over what he’s achieved in the last 12 months, starting with securing his first professional contract with Central Coast and earning an international call-up with New Zealand.

But the exciting right-back’s rapid rise is about to enjoy a new turn when he lines up against the ‘Old Lady” of Italian football at ANZ Stadium on August 10.

And Roux will do it alongside team-mate Alessandro Del Piero – captain of the Foxtel A-League All Stars. What a story.

“It’s going to be an amazing experience and ever since I was selected it was something I was very excited to be part of,” Roux told www.a-leagueallstars.com.au  at today’s launch.

“Last year I was watching the game from my couch without an A-League club so I’m probably still a little shocked right now to think I’m part of  the next All-Stars game, especially against a massive team like Juventus with so many great players.”

Playing down the right-hand side for Josep Gombau’s side, Roux is likely to come face-to-face with new Juventus signing and French left-back Patrice Evra in what promises to be an enthralling battle.

“Every footballer is excited when you get to test yourself against some great players,”  the Mariners man said.

“It’s not going to be easy but I think of it as another chance to show what I can do and try and impress.

“You have to look forward to these things because that’s what you play for and what makes you a better player.”

FFA Chief David Gallop was on hand at the Sydney Opera House as Telstra was announced as the new official shirt sponsor, while the last four players were added to the All-Stars squad.

“It’s Important for us to play a big game against a world famous club and this is a reminder of the global nature of football,” Gallop said.

“Our players grow up knowing about world famous clubs like Juventus and unless you play in a national team, then these kinds of opportunities don’t come along.

“We think it’s an important opportunity to showcase the A-League, to give our players a special game and give our fans a chance to see a club that they will all know of the legendary status of Juventus in Italian and world football.”

Roux will go down a Storm against Italian champs

Storm Roux celebrates scoring against the Phoenix during last season's Hyundai A-League.

Storm Roux celebrates scoring against the Phoenix during last season’s Hyundai A-League.

Josh Rose says teammate and fellow Foxtel A-League All Star Storm Roux has the potential to light up ANZ Stadium when Juventus hit town next month.

The Mariners pair have been selected in the Foxtel A-League All Star squad to face Juventus on August 10 in Sydney.

Alongside the likes of Hyundai A-League player of the year Thomas Broich from the championsBrisbane, superstar striker Besart Berisha from Victory and captain Alessandro Del Piero, it’s set to be a fabulous occasion.

And Rose can’t wait to see Roux – a player he describes as “special” – on the big stage against the Italian champions.

As a left back, Rose was part of last year’s local side that faced Manchester United at a sell-out ANZ, so he knows all about this type of glamour match.

And he believes the 21-year-old All White right back can rise to the occasion when Josep Gombau’s men face Tevez, Pirlo and Co.

“He was fantastic last season, right from the first session you could see he was quite special,” Rose told www.a-leagueallstars.com.au

“He’s an entertaining player, he’s up and down the park and creates and sets up goal which is what you want.

“He’s also a good kid with a good attitude and he’s definitely got a big future in the game if he keeps continuing the way he is.”

After a stunning first season with the Mariners, the South African born New Zealand international looms as one of the most exciting talents ahead of the new season 10 of the Hyundai A-League.

And after extending his contract recently, Roux is just the sort of player Phil Moss needs as the club looks to continue its rebuild back to Championship winning ways.

Rose, now 32, has experienced club football locally and overseas and as had this advice for the All Whites rising star.

“It’s always hard to knock back the opportunity to go overseas at a young age, but it’s got to be somewhere where he gets game time and keeps developing.

“It’s important game time, it’s the best experience you can have.

“I wouldn’t rush into it if I was him. I’d continue playing for the Mariners and enjoy that and whatever comes of that and if it’s the right one, then for sure, grab it.”

Champions of Italy, Juventus, take on the Foxtel A-League All Stars led by the Italian champion Alessandro Del Piero at ANZ Stadium, Sydney on Sunday 10 August.

First FOXTEL A-League All Stars named to face Juventus

FOXTEL A-League All Stars Sasa Ognenovski, Tomi Juric and Josh Rose will play Juventus next month.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today revealed Central Coast Mariners defenders Josh Rose and Storm Roux, Sydney FC duo Sasa Ognenovski and Ali Abbas, and Western Sydney Wanderers’ Matthew Spiranovic & Tomi Juric as the first six players to join captain, Alessandro Del Piero in the FOXTEL A-League All Stars 2014 squad.

The announcement was made exclusively on Seven Nightly News.

FFA CEO David Gallop was excited by the announcement of the first group of players, which were voted on by the fans, to join Coach Josep Gombau’s squad that will take on Italian Serie A champions Juventus at ANZ Stadium on Sunday 10 August 2014.

“Following the success of last year’s Foxtel A-League All Stars match, the sense of excitement and expectation for this year’s match against one of the biggest clubs in world football, Juventus, is palpable,” said FFA CEO David Gallop.

“The match will showcase the best talent from the Hyundai A-League against truly world class opposition with 12 players from the Juventus squad appearing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“I’m sure that fans will get behind this group of players in the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad for this once in a lifetime event.”

Central Coast Mariners defender and New Zealand International, Storm Roux, receives his first call-up to the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad after a stellar Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season, while for Rose, this is his second selection after he lined up in the inaugural match against Manchester United last year.

“It’s fantastic. I think last year when I made it I said it’s a great reward for all of the hard work, and same again this year – it’s something to look forward to and something that I’ll remember forever,” Rose said.

“It’s a great opportunity for the A-League guys, a chance to enjoy the experience and test ourselves against world class opponents.”

Sydney FC central defender Sasa Ognenovski helped to sure up the Sky Blues defence following his arrival at the club in February this year. The imposing figure has made 22 appearances for the Socceroos and was named the AFC Asian Player of the year in 2010, and he is looking forward to the challenge of facing Juventus’ best.

“You always want to play against the best teams and the best players in the world, and it will be a good test against Juventus,” Ognenovski said.

“These are once in a lifetime games against once in a lifetime opponents, so to play against them and alongside (Alessandro) Del Piero in a game like this against a club he was a legend at will be an amazing experience.”

Ognenovski’s Sky Blues team mate Ali Abbas played every minute of every game in the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season, scoring two goals in the process, his performances seeing him named the 2013/14 Sydney FC Players’ Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year.

Western Sydney Wanderers central defender Matthew Spiranovic has had the perfect preparation for the match after starting in all three of the Socceroos matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, his selection for the national team coming thanks to a standout season for the red and black.

Fellow Wanderer, 22 year-old striker Tom Juric, has had a meteoric rise since joining the Hyundai A-League last year, leading to a debut for the Socceroos. Now, the chance to possibly lead the line against Juventus is certain to be another significant achievement in his short career thus far.

“It’s going to be an exciting game and it’s going to be a big stage for all of us that we’re all looking forward to,” Juric said.

“I’m very excited and feel privileged about being selected in the squad to take on Juventus in myhome city.”

The remaining fan voted players in the Foxtel A-League All Stars 2014 squad will be announced throughout this week as well as Head Coach Josep Gombau’s four (4) wild card picks.

The Foxtel A-League All Stars will meet Juventus at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on 10 August with the match to be broadcast live and exclusive on the Seven Network nationally.
