Launched in February, the “Comprehensive Operation – Sinai 2018” aims to eradicate terrorism in North and Central Sinai, in addition to other areas in the Nile Delta and Western Desert.
Since the ousting of former Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated President Mohamed Morsi, Egypt has seen growing waves of extremism washing over the society and spawning numerous deadly attacks. Among these attacks was the terrorist attack that hit Al-Rawdah Mosque in Al-Arish, North Sinai, and left more than 302 Friday prayer congregants dead in late November.

Egypt removes ban on importing Russian wheat
The Egyptian Supreme Administrative Court on Saturday ruled in favor of an appeal, presented by the State Lawsuits Authority, against the ban over imports of Russian wheat after they were found to contain traces of Ergot fungus.
This coincides with Moscow’s Russian-Egyptian summit on Wednesday. With the attendance of a Russian-Egyptian Business Council representative, the summit discussed technical problems that could present a hurdle in agricultural trade, particularly in wheat and potatoes.
Central Administration for Agricultural Extension and the Environment Head Ahmed al-Attar told the press that the meeting included ministers of trade from both countries as well as the Egyptian embassy in Moscow, and concluded with a cooperation agreement in the field of agriculture, including the establishment of agricultural and animal quarantines.
Attar also said that Egypt requested that Russia lift their ban on eight pieces of land, which has been ongoing since 2015 after rot was found in several potatoes. On the other hand, Moscow promised to lift the ban after all studies were completed.
The countries have agreed that the import ban should only apply to crops from pieces of land that were proven infected, and not to the whole region. Attar told press that the Russians have already agreed and await the results of studies they require from the Egyptian side to determine the proper potatoes for use.
This issue began in 2016, when a lawsuit was filed by lawyer Tarek al-Awady against the Egyptian prime minister and ministers of agriculture, health, and supply, arguing for the ban of Russian wheat imports due reported infection.
That same year saw Egypt no longer abide by the international 0.05 tolerance limit on fungus in wheat imports, instituting a zero-tolerance policy instead.
Egypt is the world’s largest importer of wheat and receives almost one-third of Russian wheat exports.

Alexandria to become the first Middle Eastern city with electric buses
The General Transportation Authority announced on Tuesday that Egypt’s first batch of electric buses from BYD Chinese company will arrive on June and will operate on the Corniche route in Alexandria.
Contracts for the 15 buses were signed last January, making Alexandria the first Egyptian and Middle Eastern city to have electric buses.
President of the General Transportation Authority Khaled Eliwa told press that the buses have a capacity of 90 passengers, and will come equipped with air conditioning, GPS trackers, special chairs for passengers with disabilities and WiFi.
Eliwa added that the value of these buses lie in the fact that they cause no pollution, and do not emit noise or gas emissions. Moreover, the cost of these buses is almost equal to the cost of those that operate with gas, which is equivalent to LE 4 million.
He added that these new buses operate on a maximum speed of 80 km/hr, with a 300 kilowatt engine, equivalent to 430 horsepower. As for the batteries, they take three to four hours to charge for every 250 km without air-conditioning, and three to four charging hours for every 210 km in case of air-conditioning.
Alexandria Governor Mohamed Sultan told press that Alexandria already has 750 buses of different sizes covering all its regions, adding that there is currently a direction towards increasing and improving public transportation over the next period.
Board President of Al-Amal Company for International Trade also said that the company mainly targets revolutionizing transportation in Egypt, starting with importing electric buses to Alexandria, adding that BYD created 14,000 electric buses last year in addition to 35 fuel buses in the past five years. He concluded that the contract includes maintenance services for the new electric buses.
January witnessed signature of contracts between BYD company and Eliwa after BYD won the bid for the electric buses.

Egypt’s Army kills eight militants, arrests 64 suspects in Sinai
As the wide-scale military operation ‘Comprehensive Sinai 2018’ continues, the official spokesman for the Egyptian Army announced in a 23rd statement that eight militants have been killed in Sinai.
According to the statement released on Tuesday, the Egyptian Armed Forces also managed to arrest 64 suspects believed to be members of the IS (Islamic State) affiliated group ‘Sinai Province’.
It was also stated that the Egyptian Air Forces targeted two vehicles attempting to cross Egypt’s western border loaded with weapons and bombs. In addition, 20 vehicles and 79 motorbikes used by the militants were destroyed.
Also destroyed were 80 stationing points used by the militants as hiding places and storage for their ‘Improvised Explosive Devices’ (IEDS).
In February, the Egyptian Armed Forces cooperated with the police for a wide-scale military operation around Egypt centralized in the Sinai Peninsula, to eliminate the presence of IS. Both the Second and Third Field armies conducted the operation in Sinai.
The IS affiliated group ‘Sinai Province’ has been active in the areas of North and Central Sinai since 2014. The group had been previously known as the ‘Ansar Byat al-Maqdus’, and was established to oppose the Egyptian Armed Forces. The group’s ideology sees the army and police forces as apostates who must be killed in order to pave the way for the Islamic Caliphate.
With the rise of the IS in Iraq and Syria during 2014, the ’Ansar Byat al-Maqdus’ declared its affiliation to IS and changed their name to ‘Sinai Province’. This step was followed by massive and unprecedented attacks against the army and police’s stationing points based in the Sinai Peninsula.
In response to these attacks, the Egyptian Armed Forces launched a number of military operations prior to the ‘Comprehensive Sinai 2018’ operation. These operations went on under the name of ‘Martyr Right’ and witnessed the elimination of hundreds of militants from ‘Sinai Province’.
