Lusvarghi was detained outside the building of the Embassy of Brazil in Kyiv. Rafael Lusvarghi killed Ukrainian soldiers in Donbas / Photo from facebook.com/yevgen.karas Ukrainian nationalists have caught Rafael Lusvarghi, a 33-year-old Brazilian mercenary, who fought on the side of Russian-led troops against the Ukrainian army in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, and brought him to the office of the SBU Security Service of Ukraine in Kyiv. After it became known that Lusvarghi, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison in Ukraine on charges of terrorism, has been secretly living in Kyiv’s Moscow-controlled Sviato-Pokrovsky Holosiyivsky Monastery, members of Ukrainian nationalist organizations went to the monastery, but the Brazilian had already left it. The nationalists examined his room there, head of the group С14 (Sich) Yevgen Karas said on Facebook on May 4. Later, it became known С14 members detained Lusvarghi outside the building of the Embassy of Brazil in Kyiv. He was taken to the SBU’s main office located in the center of Kyiv. “[Lusvarghi] is saying sorry to the Ukrainian people on his knees and asking for return to a detention center,” Karas said. PREVNEXT 1/3 As was reported earlier, Lusvarghi, the self-described former member of the French Foreign Legion, arrived in Russian-occupied Donbas in the middle of 2015, avowing “great love for Russia” and being determined to fight “fascism” in Ukraine. He fought in such signal Ukrainian battles as the fights for the town of Debaltseve and Donetsk airport, where the Ukrainian army sustained heavy losses. In January 2017, Lusvarghi became the first non-Russian convicted for crimes related to the war when he was found guilty in Ukraine of creating a “terrorist organization” and “recruiting mercenaries for terrorists.” Ukrainian prosecutor in Lusvarghi’s case Ihor Vovk explained that the Brazilian citizen was supposed to be swapped in December 2017 for Ukrainian hostages held by the self-proclaimed Donbas republics, the “DPR” and the “LPR.” “Thus, his measure of restraint had to be changed, as he was accused of crimes that suggested imprisonment,” he said. A Ukrainian court released Lusvarghi but his swap did not take place, and he has been living in Kyiv since then.

Ukrainian border guards send two Russians back to Minsk over St. George ribbon (Photo)

Flag of Ukraine.svg

The capital of Belarus, Minsk, is used as a transit destination for those travelling between Russia and Ukraine. The Russians refused to remove the ribbon / Photo from facebook.com/oleh.slobodyan Two Russian citizens – a man and a woman – have been refused entry into Ukraine and sent back to Minsk, Belarus, over a controversial St. George ribbon. The incident happened at Kyiv’s Boryspil Airport on the evening of May 3, spokesman for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service Oleh Slobodyan has said.

“Both arrived on a private visit, with enough money to stay in Ukraine and having return tickets. But St. George ribbons that are outlawed in Ukraine were attached to the tourists’ luggage,” he wrote on Facebook. The two declined the border guards’ instruction to remove the ribbons that are considered to be a symbol of Russian aggression against Ukraine. “In this connection, the border guards did not let these individuals cross the border and they took a return flight to Minsk,” he said. There are no direct flights between Ukraine and Russia, therefore the capital of Belarus, Minsk, is used as a transit destination for those travelling between the two countries. The St. George ribbon, which is a reference to the Order of Saint George (Russian Empire’s highest combat award), was widely used in Russia to informally symbolize the victory over the Nazis in World War II. However, following the Maidan events in 2014, the Revolution of Dignity of Ukraine, this symbol was widely used by counterrevolution forces and subsequently by Russian-led troops fighting against the Ukrainian army in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s parliament in May 2017 passed a law banning the use of the St. George ribbon in Ukraine.

Ukraine demands release of fishing vessel detained by Russia near Crimea

There were five crewmembers on board the ship. The ministry says Ukraine remains the coastal state with regard to the waters around Crimea / Photo from UNIAN Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands the immediate release of a Ukrainian fishing vessel and its crew detained by Russia in the Black Sea near the Russian-occupied Crimea. “Ukraine protests in the strongest terms the unlawful detention this morning by the Russian Federation of a Ukrainian fishing vessel and its crew in the vicinity of the Crimean coast. Ukraine demands the immediate release of the fishing vessel and its crew,” the ministry said in a statement on May 4.

As the UN General Assembly has made clear, Russia’s unlawful aggression does not alter the status of Crimea as Ukraine’s sovereign territory, the ministry recalled. Ukraine remains the coastal state with regard to the waters around Crimea, including the territorial sea extending 12 nautical miles from its coast. “Russia’s detention of this fishing vessel usurps Ukraine’s sovereign rights in those waters and as such is a manifest violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as of customary international law,” the ministry said. The vessel was detained by Russian border guards near the Crimean coast on the morning of May 4. There were five crewmembers on board the ship. Some media reported that the Russian border guards had detained the small-sized YaMK-0041 fishing vessel to the west of Cape Tarkhankut. Spokesman for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service Oleh Slobodyan said there was no contact with the crew and the Ukrainian authorities were examining the circumstances of the incident. “It’s hard to say how and why the ship violated the state border of Ukraine and turned to be in the zone that is considered to be temporarily occupied by Russia,” he said. In his opinion, most likely, the captain of the ship decided to go where, in his opinion, the catch would be better, having thus neglected the risk of detention by the border guards of the occupation forces.

DOHA: An exhibition of creations by Italian artist Elisabetta Farina opened at the Katara Cultural Village Building 19 on Wednesday.

Interestingly titled “Beautiful to eat, Good to look at,” the exhibition showcases artworks in the form of oversized cupcakes, boxes of chocolates and bright banquets. Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Sayed, Deputy General Manager of Katara and Carlotta Colli, Charge d’ Affaires at the Italian Embassy in Qatar opened the exhibition in the presence of a number of visitors and dignitaries. The exhibition will run until May 13 and is open to public from10am to 10pm.

“We are very happy to host, together with Katara, this special exhibition by Italian resident artist Elisabetta Farina. What we like about this exhibition is that it presents an ironic perspective on a theme, which is also serious, and engage the visitors in a reflection on the interlink between hand, nutrition and overconsumption. It is a journey through the world of pastry and a food for thought for everyone,” said Colli.

Farina said the exhibition represents the “sweet” memories connected to the places she lived, such as Doha, New York, Paris and Italy.

The inspiration of the exhibition came from the observation of a growing trend: the so called Cake mania. Chocolate and sugar are used as artistic material as it is done with bronze and clay.”

The title summarises the message and the content of the exhibition. The “beautiful” is not only to “see” but also to “eat” and the “good” is not only to “taste” but also to “watch”.

DOHA: Al Garabia, an exhibition of works by a group of Latin American artists based in Qatar, opened at Katara Cultural Village Building 18 on Wednesday.

Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Sayed, deputy general manager of Katara and Rossana Cecilia Surballe, the Ambassador of Argentina to Qatar opened the exhibition in the presence of ambassadors of several Latin American countries and other visitors and dignitaries. The exhibition will run until May 14 from 10am to 10pm. The exhibition is titled Al Garabia, after a linguistic expression, rich with cultural and historic meanings.

The term algaravia or al-arabîya is complex in significance giving its many layers, ranging from its colonial origins to the modern Spanish expression Algarabía, meaning a sudden loud situation or troupe of people creating confusion and bewilderment. This definition is also often used to describe the Middle Eastern and Latino American peoples which aside of the cliché highlights the similarities derived from long standing cultural ties between the two worlds.

“We call ourselves Group of Seven, meaning seven Latin American artists based in Qatar. Three more have joined this exhibition and we may change the name to G10,” said Maria Al Badr, one of the participating artists, originally from Uruguay, married and settled in Qatar.

Al Badr said that the basic idea behind the exhibition was to show “what the Arab cultures have given to our countries,” through Arab immigrants who came to Latin America several centuries ago. About 40 artworks illustrating the cultural link between Arabs and Latin American countries are on display at the exhibition.

The exhibits include a painting by Al Badr, titled Bustle of Lights which evoke joyful memories of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan.

Juan Miguel Ramirez from Mexico has showcased a blend of photography, installations and paintings, depicting three Qatari “boats” and colourful paintings set in the backdrop of Qatari life and environment.

Other participating artists include Alma De La Barrera from Mexico, Melina Da Moura from Brazil, Angeles Ollarburo from Argentina, Johnathen Machado Tepper from Venezuela, Leonora Benavides from Chile, Maria de las Nieves Ahuad Goya from Mexico, Oscar Mantilla  and Sebastian Betancur, both from Colombia.
