Two drown in north Queensland dam during Australia Day party

A woman and a teenage boy have drowned in a far north Queensland dam at an Australia Day party, with investigations suggesting alcohol was a factor in the deaths.

Police were called to the property on Mossman Mount Molloy Road in Julatten, about 85 kilometres north-west of Cairns, just after 4pm on Friday.

Upon arrival, officers were told a 15-year-old boy had been found dead in the dam and a 23-year-old woman was missing.

One of the attending officers found the woman’s body in the water soon after arriving.

Despite “extensive efforts” to revive the pair, both were declared dead at the scene, according to police.

“It’s a typical Australia Day event where everyone is enjoying themselves. Unfortunately, there is alcohol that’s mixed with water and we have the tragic deaths of a 23-year-old and 15-year-old,” Queensland Police Service spokesman Duane Amos told Sunrise.

Police said a waterslide had been set up at the water’s edge. The two deceased were not related and it is not believed the woman drowned while trying to rescue the teenager.

A crime scene was declared and police investigations into the circumstances around the deaths were continuing, with an incident centre established at Mareeba police station.
