FFA CEO David Gallop says talk of Ange Postecoglou’s departure is ‘not ideal’

The Ange Postecoglou imbroglio looks set to fester after Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop failed to end speculation about the Socceroo coach’s future.

Reports surfaced after the last World Cup qualification game against Syria that Postecoglou would quit after next month’s play-off matches against Honduras.

Gallop didn’t provide any clarity on Postecoglou’s future – short term or otherwise – when he fronted the media on Monday.

Asked if Postecoglou had confirmed that he’d be stepping down after the matches on November 10 and 15 Gallop said: “No, I think he’s not necessarily indicated that he’s made a decision, he’s focused on November and that’s where we’re at.

“Obviously I’ve spoken to Ange a number of times, a number of factors go into this kind of thing.

“He’s made no secret of the fact he wants to coach week-in week-out again, but his focus is on November and knuckling down to the task which is to qualify for our fourth consecutive World Cup.”

Postecoglou has yet to address the initial report, that suggested he would pull the pin regardless of whether the Socceroos qualify for the World Cup or not.

Reports surfaced that he had tired of what he perceived to be incessant criticism of his tactics.

Gallop conceded the timing of Postecoglou’s reported departure wasn’t great but said the coach was comfortable with the support he was getting from FFA.

Postecoglou hasn’t clarified whether there were any current issues with FFA but has previously had to back down after criticising the peak body over the players’ pay dispute in 2015.

Asked who might be contenders for the post should it fall vacant, Gallop said: “I’m not in a position to give you names but I can tell you that we’re constantly making sure that we know what’s out there and what the positions might be.”

Quizzed over whether any replacement for Postecoglou would be Australian, Gallop said “not necessarily.

“But it’s been a strong point in the last few years is to have that connection to Australian football and understanding the A-League and an ability to look below the Socceroos at what our structures are where we’re at with our junior national teams.

“So I certainly I think it’s always in our interests to look to Australian coaches if we can.”

Ange Postecoglou Socceroos exit talk not ideal, says David Gallop

Reports surfaced that he had tired of what he perceived to be incessant criticism of his tactics.

“I would hope it’s not player power,” former Socceroos coach Paul Wade told AAP.

“He’s been copping it from the media who are asking for him to be sacked, but Ange is big enough to handle that.

“The key word for me is undermined, as a coach, if you’re being undermined by whoever, then I would find it untenable.”

Wade was frustrated by the lack of a definitive answer on Postecoglou’s future, but said he understood why it wasn’t forthcoming.

“I’d rather say nothing and get it sorted out rather than being a bitching session,” he said .

“Maybe they’re letting it calm down a little bit in-house and then they’re going to tell us.”

Gallop conceded the timing of Postecoglou’s reported departure wasn’t great. and stopped short of giving him total endorsement when asked if he still had faith in him as the national coach.

“Very confident in the fact hat he’s focused on these games and we don’t get much time to prepare in these situations,” Gallop said.

Asked who might be contenders for the post should it fall vacant, Gallop said, “I’m not in a position to give you names but I can tell you that we’re constantly making sure that we know what’s out there and what the positions might be”.

Honduras coach calls Australia playoff dates ‘inhumane’

FIFA’s decision to schedule the World Cup qualifier between Australia and Honduras with just five days in between the two matches was “inhumane”, the Central Americans’ coach Jorge Luis Pinto has said.

The first match in the intercontinental playoff for a spot at the finals in Russia next year is scheduled to take place in Central America on Nov. 10, with the second leg in Sydney five days later.

There are no direct flights from Australia to Honduras and the Honduran team’s logistics manager told local newspaper La Prensa they have to fly to Los Angeles before connecting on a flight heading Down Under.

“It’s inhumane of FIFA to put the dates so close with such a long trip in between them,” Pinto said in quotes that were widely reported in Honduras on Monday.

However, Pinto said his team will have a slight advantage in playing the first match at home.

“We don’t have to do two trips that could be harmful to us,” he said in quotes published in the Diez sports newspaper.

“On the other hand, Australia have to come here and play the game and then go home and that’s more tiring.”

How key Caltex Socceroos are performing ahead of WC Playoff

The Caltex Socceroos’ all-or-nothing intercontinental playoff against Honduras is looming, with a place at Russia 2018 on the line when the two nations clash next month.

We check in with some of the Caltex Socceroos’ key men to check their club form ahead of our most important international games in four years.

MAT RYAN

The Caltex Socceroos custodian has quickly established himself as first-choice at newly promoted Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

In his side’s latest outing, only a late Wayne Rooney penalty denied Brighton their third win of the season with their home clash against Everton finishing 1-1.

However, Ryan had an outstanding game, rescuing his team with a superb double block in the dying stages.

AARON MOOY

Like Ryan, the talented Caltex Socceroos midfielder has settled quickly into the cauldron of life in the English Premier League.

The Huddersfield Town star has played in all of his side’s eight league matches and scored his first Premier League goal in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Mooy has an exciting period ahead; in consecutive weeks Huddersfield will host Manchester United before visiting Anfield to face Liverpool.

ROBBIE KRUSE

The speedy winger continues to light up the 2.Bundesliga with another man-of-the-match display in Bochum’s 2-0 win over third-placed SV Sandhausen.

Kruse not only got through another 90 minutes but also set up both goals to inspire his side to a valuable three points.

Bochum have now given themselves some breathing space from the relegation spots, with Kruse having three more matches to maintain his form ahead of the Honduras playoffs.

MATHEW LECKIE

The livewire attacker has played every one of Australia’s 11 matches in 2017, scoring three goals and presenting a consistent threat to opposition defences.

At club level, Leckie has benefited from an off-season move to Hertha Berlin from Ingolstadt.

The former Adelaide United flier has quickly become a fan favourite, scoring four goals in eight Bundesliga games so far in 2017/18.

TRENT SAINSBURY

The classy defender is one of the first names on Ange Postecoglou’s team-sheet, starting Australia’s last ten matches in the heart of the back-three.

At club level though, Sainsbury has had considerably less game-time for his Chinese Super League outfit Jiangsu Suning.

He wasn’t in the squad for three of his side’s last four outings, but did play 90 minutes in their 1-0 win over Tianjin Quanjian in late September.

TOM ROGIC

The former Central Coast Mariners protégé is another to feature heavily for his country in 2017, scoring the winner against Saudi Arabia in June and netting Australia’s first goal at the Confederations Cup against Germany.

Celtic boss Brendon Rodgers is a huge fan, handing the midfielder significant minutes in both the Scottish Premier League and European Champions League.

Late last month, Rogic scored his side’s opening goal in their first clash of the campaign against Rangers, in front of over 50-thousand fans at Ibrox.

MILOS DEGENEK

In Ange Postecoglou’s three-man defence, Degenek has become a regular, playing a full part in nine of Australia’s 11 games this year.

The 23-year old plies his trade in Japan for Yokohama and has featured in 22 of his side’s 29 J-League games this season.

Caltex Socceroos surge in latest FIFA rankings

The Caltex Socceroos have surged up seven places in the latest FIFA rankings released for October.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are now 43rd in the World after they were in 50th spot in the September release.

The rise follows Australia’s recent World Cup Qualification play-off matches against Syria, with the Socceroos earning a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 extra-time victory over the two legs.

The Socceroos are now the second highest ranked side in Asia behind only Iran (34th).

In the AFC, Japan are third in 44th spot followed by China (57th) and Korea Republic (62nd).

Germany maintained top spot in the world rankings, with Brazil and Portugal remaining in second and third respectively.

Peru, who are set to play New Zealand in a World-Cup qualification play-off next month, jumped to 10th in the World.

New Zealand are currently 122nd in the rankings.
