Socceroos decide on Honduran base for 2018 World Cup qualifier

The Socceroos will throw themselves into the fire ahead of their World Cup play-off with Honduras, opting to spend the lead-up week to their away match in the Central American nation.

Coach Ange Postecoglou and Football Federation Australia have decided against basing the team in the United States ahead of the clash.

In doing so, they’ll give themselves the best chance to acclimatise.

But the Socceroos will also be at the mercy of fanatical local support eager to see their country represented in Russia next year.

“Los Catrachos” have reached the last two world cups off the back of a superb home record.

On the road to the 2010, 2014 and 2018 tournaments, Honduras have lost just four of 25 home qualifiers.

Honduras hosts the first match on November 11 (AEDT) before the second leg in Sydney on November 15.

Australia’s last two intercontinental play-offs – against Uruguay in 2001 and 2005 – provide a reminder of the hostilities the Socceroos can expect away from home.

The Socceroos based themselves in Montevideo in 2001, contending with fireworks outside their hotel rooms, hostilities in transit and even spitting fans at the airport.

Then-FFA chief John O’Neill described the farce, which preceded a 3-0 defeat and a missed chance to go to the 2002 tournament, as an “orchestrated campaign by some pretty unsavoury parts of the Montevideo football establishment”.

Four years later, drawn against the same opponent, Guus Hiddink based his team in nearby Buenos Aires.

It’s not lost on Australian officials that the first-leg result in 2005, a 1-0 defeat, laid the platform to qualify the next week in Sydney.

FFA’s advance planning team has agonised over the call, deciding that measures can be put in place to ensure a smooth training and preparation ahead of the game.

“We’re certainly already looking at the logistics of being on the ground in Honduras,” FFA chief executive David Gallop said when asked about special security provisions on Monday.

“We’ll have people there well in advance and we’ll do what we can to make sure that we acclimatise and have ourselves in a position to play good football.”

Players will begin to arrive in Honduras from November 5, with latecomers landing on the following days.

FFA is still awaiting advice from its Honduran counterparts, FENAFUTH, as to the venue and time of the match.

The Olympic Stadium in San Pedro Sula – which has hosted each of the country’s home qualifiers in this cycle – is all but certain to be the venue, but FFA aren’t ruling out a last-minute change.

Australian officials are also likely to book a charter flight back to Sydney, avoiding a marathon commercial flight that might get the team on home soil as late as Monday.

Sydney FC 3-2 Wellington Phoenix #HyundaiALeague20172018

Sydney FC’s Brazilian striker Bobo nabbed a brace to help Sydney FC see off an impressive Wellington Phoenix 3-2 on Sunday night to conclude Round 2 in the Hyundai A-League.

The win, while not hugely convincing from the champions, ensured they have won their opening two matches ahead of next Saturday’s Sydney Derby.

However, an injury to Adrian Mierzejewski soured the win, the classy Polish winger leaving the park on 53 minutes with a hamstring strain.

  • But, Phoenix hit back on the stroke of half time to make it 2-1.
  • However, Bobo was back to haunt Phoenix with his second and Sydney’s third shortly after the break.
  • Yet once again Phoenix got back on the scoresheet to make it 3-2 with half an hour left.
  • Phoenix pushed the champions all the way and forced a goal-line clearance from Zullo just on full time.
  • Matt Simon in time added on should’ve finished off Phoenix with two good chances but it ended 3-2 as thoughts now turn to the Sydney Derby for the Sky Blues.

Newcastle Jets 2-2 Perth Glory

Adam Taggart’s late goal helped Perth Glory earn a point in a  2-2 draw with Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium in front of almost 15,000 fans in the Hyundai A-League Round 2.

On a pristine surface and in perfect conditions, the Jets weren’t quite at the level of last week’s 5-1 win but they were within minutes of a win.

However, their former striker Taggart with two super strikes ensured the honours would remain even.

And with 14,833 fans in attendance, the Jets are clearly riding a wave of support in Newcastle with striker Roy O’Donovan now on four goals for the season.

 STORY OF THE GAME

  • Glory hit the opener inside the first 10 minutes while the Jets struggled to find any fluency in front of a large and expectant crowd.
  • But the Jets hit back on the half-hour mark courtesy of their main man,  O’Donovan.
  • And with the last play of the half Daniel Georgievski fluffed a good chance to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
  • But it came shortly after the break. Kantarovski with the go-ahead goal on the hour mark much to the delight of the big home crowd.
  • However their former hero Taggart found the net with a perfect header in time added on to make it 2-2.

Melbourne Victory 1-2 Melbourne City #HyundaiALeague20172018

Western Sydney Wanderers 2-2 Central Coast Mariners #HyundaiAleague20172018

Mariners playmaker Danny De Silva was the star of the show as Western Sydney Wanderers  came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Central Coast  in  Hyundai A-League Round 2.

The pint-sized Mariner stood out in an entertaining clash at Spotless Stadium on Saturday, scoring arguably the goal of the season to date.

 STORY OF THE GAME

  • After an impressive opening 20 minutes from the visitors, the Mariners took the early advantage. Asdrubal making it two goals in as many weeks for Paul Okon’s side.
  • Connor Pain had a super chance to make it 2-0 shortly after but his tame shot was kept out – the Mariners were to rue this miss
  • A Wanderers penalty got the home side back in it to 1-1 minutes later.
  • Mariner Danny De Silva lead the Wanderers a merry dance and it was his brilliance that helped the visitors take the lead just after the hour mark with arguably the goal of the season.
  • The Wanderers were soon back on level terms  but it was the Mariners who looked more likely to find a winner.
  • Andrew Hoole picked up a second yellow with five minutes left in regulation time, and with De Silva subbed off late, the visitors stayed compact and held on for their first point of the season.

Hoole held it up, then slid the ball through for the onrushing De Silva who picked up the ball then dinked it over the keeper. The ball was guided home by a defender on the line but it was all about De Silva’s brilliance.

Brisbane Roar 1-2 Adelaide United #HyundaiALeague20172018

Two goals in the last few minutes helped Adelaide United pick up a stunning 2-1 win on the road against Roar on Friday night at Suncorp.

Thanks largely to a classy display from Italian import Massimo Maccarone, it looked like Roar would hold on for a 1-0 win.

But two late goals to a fast-finishing United ensured a dramatic finish as the super-fit Reds made a statement with this win as they look forward to Melbourne Victory next week in Adelaide.

THE STORY OF THE GAME

  • Maccarone showed his finishing quality to give Roar a lead inside 10 minutes, his first in the A-League.
  •  With Peter Skapetis providing the ammunition for the Italian, the pair was a constant threat.
  • Maccarone looked a class above showing great energy and guile throughout while both keepers Izzo (Reds) and Theo ((Roar) made key stops at vital times.
  • Reds striker George Blackwood hit the post early in the second half before he was subbed off.
  • It got feisty as United pressed hard in the final 20 minutes
  • And the super-fit Reds found a way back with  Kitto and Absalonsen powering home the equaliser and winner in the final few minutes to ensure a dramatic ending to a hard-fought clash.
