Iraqi jets kill dozens of Islamic State militants in Tal Afar

Mosul ( Dozens of Islamic State militants were killed as Iraqi fighter jets destroyed launched airstrikes destroying the militants locations in Tal Afar town, west of Mosul.

“Iraqi fighter jets launched airstrikes that destroyed a weapon stash, rest house, booby-trapping workshops of the IS in Tal Afar,” a statement by the War Media Cell said on Wednesday, adding “dozens of militants were killed.”

On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry announced destroying three booby-trapped vehicles by Iraqi airstrikes in Tal Afar.

Tal Afar is one of the important strongholds still held by IS in Nineveh.

The group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground since an offensive was launched in mid October to retake Mosul, the second-largest Iraqi city and the militants’ last urban stronghold in the country.

Eastern Mosul was recaptured from IS in January, after a US-backed offensive was launched in October. A new offensive started in February to retake the west.

on Tuesday, Federal Police said more than 1200 Islamic State militants, including 27 leaders and 214 snipers, were killed, while 300 square kilometers were retaken since operations began in western side of Mosul.

Less than 1000 fighters are believed to be remaining in Mosul’s Old City, according to commanders from the Iraqi leadership and the allied U.S.-led coalition.
