Two young people from adolescent cancer charity CanTeen received the shock of a lifetime on Wednesday, as they were greeted by a surprise visit from Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi at the City Football Academy in Melbourne.

Teenagers Georgia-Mae and Denis enjoyed an unforgettable day, receiving a special tour of the City Football Academy from Melbourne City FC CEO Scott Munn, before their afternoon took an unexpected twist.

Wearing their brand-new Argentina jerseys, the teenagers were gearing themselves up for a routine kickabout on City’s elite training pitch, where they were greeted by none other than five-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner Messi.

The surprises didn’t stop there, with Messi presenting both teens with a brand-new pair of football boots, and signing their new jerseys.

For Georgia-Mae and Denis, spending time with the world’s best footballer was a deserved time-out. Georgia-Mae’s sister was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when Georgia was 11 and she has been supported by CanTeen ever since, becoming part of the leadership group and a mentor for other young people.

Denis’ mum was diagnosed with breast cancer when he was 11. A huge football fan, he has grown up with CanTeen and is now part of their leadership group.

CanTeen is the Australian national support organisation for young people aged 12-24 living with cancer.

Ange Postecoglou praises Caltex Socceroos’ strength in depth

Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media in Adelaide ahead of Thursday's vital FIFA World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media in Adelaide ahead of Thursday’s vital FIFA World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.
Ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia on Thursday night, Caltex Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou has pinpointed his midfield as perhaps his side’s area of greatest strength.

NOT JUST MILE AND MILLSY ANYMORE

“It’s probably developed in the last two-and-a-half years since the Asian Cup,” Postecoglou told the assembled media in Adelaide.

“Guys like Luongo, Mooy, Rogic, Irvine and Troisi are getting to the stage of their careers where they’re progressing and playing at a good level.

Jackson Irvine“They’re also now getting between that 10 and 20 appearances for Australia.

“When you back that up with the experience of Mile and Millsy, we’ve got some real depth there.

“I could literally put two or three different formations out there and I’d be pretty comfortable putting them all out there to get the job done.

“That’s the kind of position we wanted to be in and it’s certainly a strength of ours,” he said.

YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET

While his immediate focus is on gaining three precious points against the Saudis, the Caltex Socceroos coach also has an eye to the future.

And it’s looking bright for many of his midfield brigade.

“Their best football is ahead of them – they’re nowhere near in their peak period,” Postecoglou declared.

“Hopefully they keep getting the right encouragement to continue on and have the same mindset and all those guys are very motivated to improve their football.

“It’s exciting for tomorrow and it’s exciting for beyond tomorrow.”

FRESH FACES LEADING THE WAY

It’s not just his midfielders who have Postecoglou excited about the future.

There are others who have the world at their feet, too.

“You look at Sainsbury, Juric, Leckie, Smith,” said Postecoglou.

Mathew Leckie controls the ball in the recent qualifier against UAE.“All these guys are 23, 24.

“We’ve invested two or three years into them and I think over this next period it will be exciting to see how far they can go as footballers and how far the team can go.

“At the same time, Ajdin [Hrustic] has come in and looked really good at training and we had Riley [McGree] in the last camp, so we’re constantly challenging things in that area as well.”

APPROACH DOESN’T ALTER IN ADELAIDE

A win would be a huge step along the road to automatic World Cup qualification.

Anything less would make things much more difficult.

But Australia’s talismanic skipper isn’t going “all-in” on one 90-minute performance from his side.

Mile Jedinak press conference“It’s just as important as every other game,” Mile Jedinak told reporters on the eve of the game at Adelaide Oval.

“There are three points at stake.

“I don’t think [our preparation] changes too much from what we normally do.

“We prepare, we analyze accordingly as we do with anybody, as we have done up until this point.

“We take a look at how they might set up and what they might try and do.

“We obviously work on our own stuff more importantly – how we’re going to try to dominate the game and break through them.

“Then you put that into practice on the training pitch.

“We’ve done that the last few days and it’s been really good,” he said.

STARTING SPOTS UP FOR GRABS

While Jedinak’s place in the side is assured, matters elsewhere are far from certain.

Only Mark Milligan (suspended) is unavailable, with coach Ange Postecoglou set to keep his players guessing before naming his line-up just hours before kick-off.

“From what I’ve seen in the last couple of days, everyone is raring to go,” said Jedinak.

“It’s going to be a tough job for [Ange] picking the eleven.

Tomi Juric says the success of Caltex Socceroos Aaron Mooy and Tommy Rogic can’t help but have a positive flow-on effect for the national side.

“But I think he knows that and enjoys that because everybody really is chomping at the bit.

“Hopefully that will show tomorrow night.”

OVAL CROWD CAN ROAR ROOS HOME

Jedinak is calling on the South Australian football faithful to show up in numbers.

“We’re at home which we haven’t been all that often in this qualification campaign but we get another chance to play in front of the locals here.

“Last time round it was a great atmosphere and we’re hoping and expecting more of that tomorrow night.

“I have no doubt with what we’ve set out to do and how we’ve gone about it so far, we’ll give it our all and hopefully be on the positive side of that result.

“It’s up to us to make sure we get the job done,” he added.

Preview: Caltex Socceroos v Saudi Arabia

There's a lot on the line when the Caltex Socceroos take on Saudi Arabia in Thursday night's FIFA World Cup qualifier in Adelaide.

There’s a lot on the line when the Caltex Socceroos take on Saudi Arabia in Thursday night’s FIFA World Cup qualifier in Adelaide.

Automatic qualification for Russia 2018 reaches a critical point as the third-placed Caltex Socceroos host Saudi Arabia in second on Thursday night at Adelaide Oval.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

· Australia need a win to stay in touch with the top two in the group and automatic qualification to the next World Cup

· Australia have in-form attacking players such as EPL bound Aaron Mooy, Celtic’s Tom Rogic, Championship star Jackson Irvine, Swiss-based Tomi Juric and German-based Mat Leckie. And then there’s the legend, Tim Cahill.

· The Saudis have been preparing for this game for the best part of a month, in Frankfurt, then Saudi Arabia and Adelaide, where they arrived a week before the game.

· In second spot and three points ahead of the Socceroos, the Saudis would be all but assured of direct qualification to the World Cup if they won at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

· With just two games left after this, a draw would suit the Saudis better than it would Australia.

**AFC has 4.5 qualification spots for the next World Cup with the top two in both AFC groups progressing.

Third place in each group is dragged into a home and away continental showdown with the winner moving into a home and away inter-continental playoff against a CONCACAF nation.

Saudi Arabia: 53

AUSTRALIAN SQUAD NEWS

· Defender Ryan McGowan failed to train after his flight was delayed into Adelaide from China. The 18-cap Socceroo was due to arrive late last night.

· Aziz Behich was restricted to light duties after being one of the last to arrive in camp. The Turkish-based defender was put through some fitness work as well as some stretching and recovery exercises on Tuesday.

· Key midfielder Mark Milligan will miss Thursday’s game with suspension (yellow card accumulation)

FINAL WORD

Bert Van Marwijk’s men are desperate to return to their glory days – they last qualified for a World Cup in 2006 and the exploits of the USA 1994 side remain a high-water mark for Saudi football.

While the Caltex Socceroos’ tactical evolution continues and new personnel add a fresh feel to the squad – there’s no doubt this is a pivotal point in the group when it comes to results.

Both sides know the huge importance of this game. This will be a no-holds-barred, intense 90 plus minutes.

In Australia’s first game of a “Super June” – one that includes a friendly with Brazil next week and the Confederations Cup later in June – how “super” this month is will largely be determined by Thursday night’s result.
