In a battle of the Socceroos midfielders, it was Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield Town who won out 1-0 over Jackson Irvine and Burton Albion.
It was a tight contest at the Pirelli Stadium, Nahki Wells’ 85th minute strike enough to hand Town a vital three points.
And Mooy played a part in the winner with his free-kick headed on by Christopher Schindler for Wells to finish. While Huddersfield are fourth on the Championship ladder, Burton are just one place and two points outside the relegation zone. However, in a sign of his growing influence at Albion, Irvine wore the armband for the Brewers. Caltex Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak put in another strong shift for Aston Villa, who were narrowly beaten 1-0 at Norwich City. In the Premier League, Brad Smith and Adam Federici were on the bench as AFC Bournemouth beat champions Leicester City 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Rogic continued his stunning form for Celtic as they extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership after a 1-0 win over Hamilton Academical. The 23-year-old created a host of chances for the hosts, including the winner from leigh Griffiths just before half-time.
It was Rogic’s sublime pass which released Moussa Dembele to put the ball on a plate for Griffiths to score.
The Hoops are now 11 points clear at the top of the SPL, with two games in hand on second-placed Rangers.
And former Wanderers skipper Nikolai Topor-Stanley endured a torrid night in the UAE, taken off at half-time as his Hatta side lost 4-0 to Al Jazira in the League Cup.
