Socceroos cop tough Confed Cup draw

The Caltex Socceroos have been drawn to play Germany, Chile and the Champions of Africa at next year’s Confederations Cup.

The Caltex Socceroos will face World Champions Germany, 2014 FIFA World Cup opponents Chile and the winner of the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup following the draw in Kazan, Russia this morning.

The Socceroos will be in Group B and take on Germany in the opening match in Sochi on June 19 and the African Champions in Saint Petersburg on June 22 before taking on Chile in Moscow on June 25. All matches kick off at 6pm (1am AEST).

The winner of the CAF African Cup of Nations will be crowned on 5 February 2017.

Tickets for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup will go on sale on 1 December 2017 through www.FIFA.com/tickets In the other group, Russia, New Zealand, Portugal and Mexico were drawn together.

Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou attended the ceremony along with the other National Coaches and described the draw as an ideal opportunity for the Socceroos to test themselves on the world stage. “We are excited now we know who we have to play and we will start preparing immediately,” Postecoglou said.

“We’ve earned the right to play in the Confederations Cup by winning the Asian Cup and as Champions of Asia we now look forward to testing ourselves against some of the best nations in world football. “Germany and Chile will be tough opponents and we know the winner of the African Cup of Nations will be a quality side but we will go into the games well prepared and ready to show everyone what we are capable of.

“Australian football is growing rapidly and our growth as a football nation will only continue if we have the opportunity to play to test ourselves against the very best and we certainly have that with the Confederations Cup.”

FFA CEO David Gallop said: “The Caltex Socceroos always make us proud when they perform on the international stage and the 2017 Confederations Cup is another wonderful opportunity for our players to show the rest of the world how far Australian football has come.

“The Socceroos are a fantastic representation of Australia’s culture and diversity and they will represent Australia with pride in front of millions of football fans from all corners of the globe.

“I’m sure all of Australia will get behind Ange and the Socceroos when they head to Russia in June 2017 for the Confederations Cup, which will be an enthralling appetiser for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.”
