Mat Ryan and Nathan Burns discuss the challenge that awaits the Caltex Socceroos in their bid to qualify for the next World Cup.

The Caltex Socceroos have dropped in the latest FIFA world rankings released today following this month’s World Cup Qualifier against Thailand.

Having climbed to their highest ranking since 2012 last month, the 2-2 draw in Bangkok has seen Australia drop eight places from 40th to 48th in the world.

Iran (30th) continue to lead the way in the Asian Football Confederation followed by Korea Republic (37th) and Japan (45th).

Ange Postecoglou’s squad will next play Iraq (120th) away and the UAE (64th) in Sydney in March 2017 in their bid to qualify for Russia 2018.

The Caltex Socceroos are currently placed third in Group B, one point behind Saudi Arabia (56th) and Japan at the half-way point in the final stage of qualifiers.

Elsewhere around the globe, Argentina retained their status as the top ranked nation, closely followed by Brazil, Germany and Chile.
