Coach Quotes

Mahdi Ali, UAE

“All the players are ready for the match, which is very important for us in order to remain in contention in such a difficult group. We know that a win is very important in order to make a good comeback after the defeat against Saudi Arabia and it will be a difficult match.

“We should try to take advantage of playing at home and in front of our fans. We should be calm and have good concentration, especially in the small details that will be the difference between the two teams.”

Radhi Shenaishil, Iraq

“We are in a difficult situation as we must avoid dropping points and we need to win against UAE if we want to maintain our chance in the group. We had good performances in the previous matches but we were not lucky to avoid defeat.

“We are ready for the match tomorrow and if we play with the same good performance that we had in the previous matches, I’m confident that we can get a good result. We respect our opponents, who have improved a lot in the recent years but we are a good side as well and our players have good experience.”

Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers Third Round: Syria v Islamic Republic Iran preview

Seremban: Group A leaders Islamic Republic of Iran are hoping to extend their Russia 2018 Asian Qualifying Third Round unbeaten streak as they take on Syria, a team that has caused problems against the likes of Korea Republic and China PR so far.

  • Syria coach Ayman Hakeem believes that a good game plan will be key to unlocking a well-organised Iranian defence. Consistency is the key for Iranian coach Carlos Queiroz, as the Portuguese tactician looks to keep things tight at the back while winning games.
  • IR Iran are missing rumoured Liverpool target Sardar Azmoun as well as midfielder Ehsan Hajsafi through suspension.
  • Winger Mahmoud Al Mawas is the only Syrian player to have scored in this round of qualifying, in a 1-0 win over China on Matchday Three.
  • IR Iran’s unbeaten streak goes back an incredible 18 games; their last defeat was a 3-1 loss to Sweden in April 2015.

Match Details
Date: 15 November 2016 (Tuesday)
Kickoff time: 8:00pm MYT, 12:00pm GMT
Venue: Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Seremban
Referee: Ali Sabah Al Qaysi (Iraq)

Coach Quotes

Ayman Hakeem, Syria
“This is a very difficult game. Iran is a strong team and in very good form at the moment. We can see that it is not easy to score goals against them, as they are well-organised.

“We need to keep to our game plan and then we can get a good result. We will have to be at our best and work hard for each other. All these games in this stage are very difficult but we have shown that we have our own strengths too and we have managed to produce some good results”

Carlos Queiroz, IR Iran
“From a tactical aspect, it is not easy to come and play in Malaysia but in respect to Syria, we are here to win. So far we have collected ten points in four games and that is a good start. We have scored four goals in those games and while that is not ideal, it is because of the strength or our opponents.

“If we can keep scoring one or two goals in every match and not concede then I will be happy. All games at this stage are difficult and intense and this is a big responsibility for a coach. We have to play against good teams like Syria and always perform to our best but then on the other hand, we know that Iran are tough opponents for other teams in the group too.”

IR Iran 1-0 Korea Republic

Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers Third Round: China v Qatar preview

Kunming: After arresting a run of three straight defeats with a win over Syria on Matchday Four, Qatar travel to Group A’s bottom-placed side China, who will be hoping that the appointment of FIFA World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi will be the catalyst for an upturn in fortunes.

Potential Line-ups

  • China coach Marcello Lippi admits his side are in a difficult predicament and need a miracle to make Russia 2018.
  • Mental strength is the key to victory against China and Lippi says Qatar coach Jorge Fossati.
  • Defender Zhang Linpeng returns from a one match ban while China icon Zheng Zhi is recalled to the side having been left out of the last two fixtures under former coach Gao Hongbo.
  • Disciplinary problems see Qatar without four players through suspension as Abdelkarim Hassan, Meshaal Abdulla, Khaled Muftah and Ahmed Yasser all miss out.
  • This is set to be Marcello Lippi’s first match as a national team coach since Italy were defeated 3-2 by Slovakia on June 24, 2010 at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Match Details
Date: 15 November 2016 (Tuesday)
Kickoff time: 7:35pm CST, 11:35am GMT
Venue: Tuodong Stadium, Kunming
Referee: Mohanad Qasim (Iraq)

Coach Quotes

Marcello Lippi, China
“I am very glad to be back here to start a new journey. It will be a very difficult mission for me to lead this team to qualify to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and we have a tough road ahead.

“We are at the bottom of the group and we need points and we only have one at the moment. It is extremely difficult; our qualification is only theoretically alive now. Our work should focus on long-term development. Of course if we can make it to Russia, it will be a great thing, but if we can’t, we should think about the future.

“Qatar is a good team. They changed the head coach recently, and their new coach is an outstanding one. He knows their players and football very well. They have great passion because they will host the World Cup soon. But their quality is no less than their passion.”

Jorge Fossati, Qatar
“I believe mental strength will be the most important factor in the result on Tuesday. Our players will show their best fighting spirit as it will be a difficult game, for both sides. We are here with big self-confidence and with all our efforts we are expecting a win.

“Lippi is a great coach with great coaching experiences and he will no doubt change the team, but I don’t think he would be able to do much in a very short time. I know Chinese players well and I don’t think there would be any in their side that we haven’t prepared for.

“I respect Marcello Lippi very much, but the match is between China and Qatar, not between me and Lippi. The players will decide the match.”

Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers Third Round: Japan v Saudi Arabia preview

Saitama: A key clash on the Road to Russia as table-topping Saudi Arabia, three points clear of third-placed Japan, look to cement their lead atop the Group B standings whilst the hosts will be desperate to bank maximum points in their third to last home match of the campaign.

Potential Line-ups

  • Japan must avoid falling into the ‘traps’ that Saudi Arabia will set according to coach Vahid Halilhodzic.
  • Saudi Arabia coach Bert van Marwijk believes that Japan face the greater challenge on their home turf.
  • There are injury and fitness doubts over several of the Japanese players, headlined by Shinji Kagawa and Yuto Nagatomo.
  • Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Yasser Al Mosailem was injured playing for his club and is likely to be ruled out.
  • The last time the sides met was during the 2011 AFC Asian Cup where Japan defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the group stage en route to winning the title.

Match Details
Date: 15 November 2016 (Tuesday)
Kickoff time: 7:35pm JST, 10:35am GMT
Venue: Saitama Stadium 2002, Saitama
Referee: Muhammad Taqi (Singapore)

Coach Quotes

Vahid Halilhodzic, Japan
“You don’t need so many philosophies in regards to this match; we’ll just do everything to win and although we know it’s difficult we’ve been working hard for that goal. I’ve said repeatedly that I want the players to play more at their club teams as they’re not robots and can’t play at the same level for the national team if they’re not performing for their clubs.

“We need to control things in this match through hard work with a strong commitment and concentration and be sure not to make too many fouls but still use all the techniques in football – the last few years Japan hasn’t been able to do this and Saudi Arabia has.”

Bert van Marwijk, Saudi Arabia
“We are looking forward to this game, tomorrow we play against the big favourite in this group but we’re prepared and have a lot of confidence ourselves because we can also play football very well.

“We always play to win, we try to play the same everywhere, whether in Saudi Arabia or abroad so it makes no difference to be here in Japan and while we know the quality of Japan I think they also know our qualities.”

Head to Head Record
17/01/11 Saudi Arabia 0-5 Japan

Coach Quotes

Uli Stielike, Korea Republic
“It goes without saying that this is an important game. It is a meeting of second and third in the group and our target is to win and move into second.

“We have watched all four Uzbekistan games so far and their friendly over Jordan. They have conceded just once, and that was a free-kick against Iran and they are strong defensively.

“But if we can play as well as we did against Canada (a 2-0 victory last Friday), it will be good and we can take confidence from that. We looked good in attack, defence and in terms of teamwork. We have to maintain the same build-up play and be strong in defence.”

Samvel Babayan, Uzbekistan
“We have prepared well for the game and have come to Korea Republic to try our best to get a good result. At the least, this is a game that we don’t want to lose and we want to keep picking up points as we look to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“We know Korea Republic well. We have met many times over the years and they are one of Asia’s strongest teams. They have a lot of talented players and it is important that we stop their most dangerous players from causing problems.

“So far, we have been playing quite well in the qualification. We have a good mix of experience and youth in the squad and we have been getting some good results and confidence is growing, and the players are feeling good.”

Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers Third Round: Thailand v Australia preview

Bangkok: Australia will look to bounce back from two consecutive draws in Group B on Matchday Five as hosts Thailand hunt for their first points after four defeats on the trot.

Potential Line-ups

  • Thailand coach Kiatisuk Senamuang is looking for improvement from his players as they gain experience at the highest level of Asian football.
  • Australia are rested and will be in a good position if they win in Bangkok, says Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.
  • Buriram United defender Koravit Namwiset will miss the match through suspension after being shown a red card against Iraq.
  • FC Luzern striker Tomi Juric has been ruled out due to injury, joining QPR midfielder Massimo Luongo and VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Mitch Langerak on the sidelines.
  • Five years ago to this day, the War Elephants hosted Australia in Bangkok in a World Cup qualifier, losing 1-0 to a Brett Holman goal.

Match Details
Date: 15 November 2016 (Tuesday)
Kickoff time: 7:00pm ICT, 12:00pm GMT
Venue: Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok
Referee: Fahad Jaber Al Marri (Qatar)

Coach Quotes

Kiatisuk Senamuang, Thailand
“We just got back from a 19-day training camp so the fitness of the players is at a high level. Their confidence is building every day; there are some injuries but the rest are doing well and are ready to go. We know this will be a tough game against Australia but we are ready.

“We are playing at home and this is an advantage and a good boost for the players to give 100 percent. We don’t want the players to be pressured as they have to go out on to the field and express who they really are and show what they can do. We don’t have any points but we are trying to improve ourselves in Asia and move to the next level. This is what we have to do tomorrow and we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Ange Postecoglou, Australia
“We are looking forward to the game as it is another step towards the 2018 World Cup. It is a challenging game for us, especially when you look at how tight the group is. We had a good week of training and all the players are ready to go. The opportunity to work with the players is a luxury, but it is by design and has been good for us. The players have appreciated just being able to train more than they usually do, mentally and physically, they are ready to go.

“We have analysed Thailand as we do every opponent. We understand that it will be a difficult game here in Bangkok since the last two meetings between the teams were very tight affairs. If we play well tomorrow and get three points we will be in a good position next year with three games at home, regardless as to what anyone else does.”

Captain Mile Jedinak was Australia’s saviour as his nerveless penalty kick salvaged a 1-1 draw against Japan in Melbourne. Genki Haraguchi had opened the scoring early for the visitors, beating Matthew Ryan with only 5 minutes on the clock but Jedinak’s second-half spot kick levelled the scores and ensured that Japan returned home with only a point as Australia stayed ahead of them in the Group B table.

Iraq 4-0 Thailand
A remarkable bit of finishing from Mohanad Abdulraheem helped Iraq to a comprehensive 4-0 win over Thailand in Tehran. The Al Nasr striker scored all four goals as the Lions of Mesopotamia earned their first points in Group B, albeit at winless Thailand’s expense. The War Elephants were reduced to ten men as defender Koravit Namwiset was sent off in the 69th minute after a foul on Ahmed Ibrahim.
