A jubilant Tim Cahill declared his Melbourne City are due “respect” in Melbourne after defeating cross-town rivals Victory 2-0 in the Westfield FFA Cup semi final on Tuesday night.

City now play Sydney FC for a chance to win their first ever piece of silverware when the Sky Blues head to AAMI Park on Wednesday November 30 for the 2016 Westfield FFA Cup final.

After a fiery clash with Victory, Cahill was over the moon at the way his team responded to the physical challenge of the Big V.

And City, he said, are now a real threat to the domination of Melbourne Victory

“If we are going to bring competition to this league,” said Cahill who’s set to play in his third Cup final.

“We’ve got to compete. And for me this is what it’s about. And I’m proud for the boys and fans.”

Cahill added City needed a “reaction” after their 3-2 loss last Friday night to Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League. And they got it.

“I said to our boys, what they [Victory] did to Adelaide [in the A-League last Saturday] they went there and were very physical and changed the way they played against us.

“We watched the game and knew that was going to happen tonight. But we can’t just lay there because “Muzzy’s” [Kevin Muscat] is the coach and let them kick us.

“You’ve got to stand up. There are two big clubs in this city and two big wins in 10 days and the respect’s there now.

“I said to the boys, all these hashtags, #thisisourcity, well it is tonight. And it will be coming soon so a bit of respect coming our way now.”

“Tonight we didn’t take a step back for anyone. And I think they [Victory] felt it.

“And this is for our fans.”
