There was disappointment for Tom Rogic and Celtic in the UEFA Champions League this morning while two Caltex Socceroos went head-to-head in the English Championship overnight.

The Hoops went down 2-0 at home to German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, denting their hopes of being involved in Europe beyond the group stage.

Second half goals from Lars Stindl and Andre Hahn were enough for the visitors, who leapfrogged Celtic into third spot in a group, which also contains Barcelona and Manchester City.

Rogic was one of Celtic’s best players on the night but his creativity and crisp passing often went unrewarded.

His best moment came just before the break when he played a sublime through ball for Scott Sinclair, but the winger fired over the bar.

Rogic was replaced with 20 minutes left with the Hoops already 1-0 down and they were unable to find a way back into the match.

Brendon Rodgers’ side have a chance for revenge when the two sides meet again in Germany in a fortnight and they need a win if they hope to qualify for knockout stages of the tournament or the Europa League.

In the Championship, Bailey Wright’s Preston North End hosted Aaron Mooy’s high-flyers Huddersfield Town at Deepdale.

And it was Wright who came out on top in a huge upset as Preston cruised to a 3-1 win.

The Caltex Socceroo defender played a full 90 minutes, with Tom Clarke, Alex Baptiste and Paul Gallagher all scoring before Nahki Wells pulled one back for the Terriers late on.

The result continues a strong run of form for Preston, who are now up to 13th in the Championship on the back of a five-game unbeaten run.

But Mooy’s Huddersfield have now lost back-to-back matches to drop from first to fourth in the division.
