AN iconic Hobart property has sold for an unprecedented sum.
The 1812 Georgian building in Salamanca, which is home to popular bar Irish Murphy’s, sold at auction this afternoon for $7.8 million.
It has been snapped up by a local buyer who has no immediate plans to change the use of the building.
Knight Frank agent John Blacklow said there were multiple bidders and the property ultimately sold to an undisclosed buyer for well above the predicted figure of up to $6 million.
The vendor sold the property after nearly 40 years of ownership.
The five-level building on the corner of Salamanca Place and Gladstone St has Irish Murphy’s on the ground floor and basement, and offices and a self-contained apartment on the other levels.
Mr Blacklow said there had been significant local, interstate and international demand during the marketing period.
