Cathay Pacific chief executive Ivan Chu says there may be enough of a first class market in Australia for the airline to consider offering its top cabin product on some flights to Sydney.
Currently, all of Cathay’s Australian services are operated with aircraft featuring a three-class cabin of business, premium economy and economy.
For Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane that means an all-Airbus A330-300 schedule, while the oneworld alliance member uses a mix of A330s and three-class Boeing 777-300ERs to Sydney.
Chu says the airline is open to looking at introducing first class Down Under at some stage with four‐class Boeing 777‐300ERs.
“We are conscious that maybe there is a first class market for Sydney,” Chu told the August edition of Australian Aviation magazine.
“In time maybe we will.
“But at the moment our four‐class 777‐300ERs are now very much engaged and employed already to Europe and North America.”
Cathay has utilised all available traffic rights for Hong Kong-based carriers to Australia’s major gateway cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney under the current bilateral air services agreement between the two countries.
Therefore, any move to add first class on a route such as Sydney would likely involve a reduction in capacity, given Cathay’s four-class 777-300ERs have 275 seats (six first, 53 business, 34 premium economy and 182 economy), compared with 340 seats for example on three-class 777-300ERs (40 business, 32 premium economy, 268 economy).
Cathay was not expected to offer first class on the 22 Airbus A350-900s and 26 A350-1000s on order. The airline has also ordered 21 Boeing 777-9Xs.
The only airline to offer first class between Sydney and Hong Kong is Qantas during seasonal periods when the Flying Kangaroo used its Airbus A380 on the route.
Chu indicated Cathay was also interested in adding additional freighter services to Australia.

Falling passenger numbers have prompted Regional Express (Rex) to issue a profit downgrade less than a month before handing down its 2014/15 full year financial results.
In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Friday, Rex said its profit outlook for the 12 months to June 30 2015 had been revised to “moderately negative for the Rex Group for the full financial year”.
“The airline continued to see deteriorating passenger numbers for the full year, albeit at a much lower pace than the two prior years, which was contrary to original expectations of a bottoming out of the decline in passenger numbers,” Rex said.
Previously, Rex had said it expected full year profit for 2014/15 to be “moderately positive for the Rex Group for the full financial year”.
Regional aviation has been hit in recent times with the slowdown in mining construction and sluggish consumer confidence, which has affected both charter and fly-in/fly-out operations and demand on marginal regular public transport routes to many country cities and towns.
The airline group was due to hand down its 2014/15 financial results on August 28.
Rex posted net profit of $7.725 million in 2013/14, which was down 44.9 per cent from the prior corresponding period.

Hong Kong Airlines will expand its network into Australia with charter services to the Gold Coast and Cairns over a three-month period between January and March 2016.
The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays via a Hong Kong-Gold Coast-Cairns-Hong Kong routing.
Hong Kong Airlines commercial director Li Dianchun said Australia had been a “long-anticipated” destination for the company.
“Leveraging our connectivity in Asia via the international hub Hong Kong, we believe the new service will be well received by the passengers especially those from Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Okinawa, Bangkok and Taipei, bringing them more travel options,” Li said in a statement on Friday.
Hong Kong Airlines will be restricted to secondary Australian destinations such as the Gold Coast, Cairns and Darwin for the forceable future as Cathay Pacific has utilised all available traffic rights for Hong Kong-based carriers to the four major Australian ports of Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney under the current bilateral air services agreements between the two countries.
A recent CAPA – Centre for Aviation research note said Gold Coast was “arguably the most attractive” of the available options, given the recent charters to the popular south Queensland destination from the likes of China Southern and Cathay.
“Hong Kong Airlines will need to test the market and ensure it can gain the necessary yields, especially outside peak periods”, functioning more as charters,” CAPA said on July 13.
“But ultimately Hong Kong Airlines will need access to major markets, Sydney especially.
“Relying on secondary markets in Australia effectively means restricting itself to leisure demand, and often from low yielding groups. Access to major cities brings higher yielding passengers as well as those looking to combine cosmopolitan Australia (Melbourne, Sydney) with a nature/sun component of the trip (Cairns, Gold Coast).”
Cathay offers year-round service to Cairns from its Hong Kong hub, while the oneworld alliance member has also served the Gold Coast with charter flights during the Chinese New Year period.
Hong Kong Airlines said it would use Airbus A330-300s which are configured with 32 business class and 260 economy class seats for its Australian flights.
Airline representatives officially announced the route at Gold Coast Airport on Friday.
Gold Coast Airport chief operating officer David Collins said the new Hong Kong Airlines service would help meet the growing demand from Chinese tourists.
“We are well aware of the demand for services between Gold Coast and China, and are confident this three-weekly service will perform strongly during the extended charter period,” Collins said in a statement.
“During the last few years we have observed a significant increase in the number of Chinese passengers travelling through Gold Coast Airport and we are hopeful this will continue to grow into the future.”

Uma grande polêmica surgiu após declarações de Alexandre Pato, que classificou o Mineirão como estádio neutro, antes do duelo diante do Atlético. Pressionando, o atacante se pronunciou e explicou que tudo não passou de um mal entendido.
“Achei que o jogo seria contra o Cruzeiro, vê se pode! Na hora pensei na famosa torcida dos 90 minutos de silêncio e do mosaico cinza, só por isso falei que o Mineirão é campo neutro. Sem puxar saco dos atleticanos nem nada, se eu lembrasse que o jogo era contra o Galo, já tremeria na hora”, disse, mostrando ter afinidade com a metade azul de Minas.
Irritada com a declaração, a torcida cruzeirense já prepara uma manifestação para a próxima partida no Mineirão. Com a promessa de bater o recorde de público do clube em 2015, cerca de 7 pessoas já confirmaram presença.

Para reforçar a afirmação acima, a Fifa cometeu uma gafe em seu site oficial, e anunciou o Coringão como tricampeão do mundo, na manhã desta quinta-feira.
O motivo da confusão foi o adversário. Assim como em 2000, o rival de quarta-feira foi o Vasco, fato que fez com que a entidade máxima do futebol mundial, atrapalhada com tantos escândalos, fizesse a absurda confusão. Um dirigente da entidade se pronunciou sobre o caso.
“Qual é a diferença entre o jogo que decidiu o Mundial de 2000 e o de ontem? Dois times brasileiros, nenhum deles campeão da Libertadores do ano ou do ano anterior, jogando em um estádio brasileiro, com transmissão ao vivo da televisão. Não tem diferença. SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) — North Korea has notified the France-based organizer of an international military sports event of its decision not to attend an event to be held in South Korea’s central city of Mungyeong in October, the defense ministry said Sunday.
In a letter sent to the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) on Friday, North Korea’s sports education committee said it will not attend the 2015 CISM World Games Korea, according to the Ministry of National Defense.
The reason for the absence was not elaborated upon, it said.
The world military sports event is scheduled for a 10-day run from Oct. 2 in Mungyeong, about 250 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and nearby cities.
The strained inter-Korean relations are believed to be keeping the North from joining South Korea-hosted global events.
Seoul earlier officially invited the North to send a vice defense minister to the Seoul Defense Dialogue set for September in the capitol city, only to be rejected by Pyongyang.
“We hoped that the military sports event could become an opportunity to untangle the worsened South-North relations, but it fell through regretfully,” a defense ministry official said, asking not to be named. “We call on the North to come to the inter-Korean talks our government has proposed.”
So far, a total of 5,440 soldiers from 72 foreign countries have signed up for the upcoming sports event, including China, Russia, England, Germany, France and Myanmar, while 37 more countries are planning to join, according to the ministry.
North Korea and 39 other countries including Libya, Afghanistan, Laos and Mexico, have rejected their invitations.
