Singapore Airlines’ first Airbus A350 to fly January 2016
Singapore Airlines will begin 2016 with the delivery of the first of 70 Airbus A350 jets as part of an ongoing fleet renewal program.
The airline expects to have three Airbus A350 jets by March 2016, with at least the first 20 of the 70-strong order being a three-class fit-out with its latest business class, new premium economy and economy seats.
The following year will also see a new raft of Airbus A380s for Singapore Airlines, with the improved superjumbos in turn revealing an all-new design for first class suites and business class.
However, Mak indicated that the airline’s later A350 jets would include a two-class version without premium economy, intended for medium-range flights where the ‘better than economy’ cabin has less appeal.
“The exact number (of A350s) for long-haul flights is still something to be pinned down but certainly the first batch that will come in will be earmarked for long-haul flights and will have premium economy.”
However, SQ won’t fit first class seats to its A350s. “It will be only three classes, because of the size of the plane you cannot fragment it too much” Mak told Australian Business Traveller.
“The A350 is a very versatile plane, covering a range of missions from long-haul to medium-haul. The backbone of our fleet now is the Boeing 777, but we have bought quite a lot of A350s, 70 planes, so the A350 will be replacing a lot of the 777s currently in operation, especially the 777-200s.”
Mak says Singapore Airlines will rely on the A350 to upgrade existing routes but also open up services to cities not currently on SQ’s network map.
“These new generation planes will allow us to operate more economically to routes which are marginal at best with today’s fleet” Mak explains.
“So it’s both a replacement of the 777-200 on existing routes but it will also allow us to look at some possibilities which are not open now because of the (route) economics.”
Singapore Airlines will join Cathay Pacific in celebrating the 2016 Chinese New Year with the new aircraft; other airlines lining up for 2016 delivery of the Airbus A350 include Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Asiana and Thai Airways.

New Air New Zealand Auckland lounge opens August; Brisbane, Melbourne to follow
Air New Zealand’s new and much-anticipated Auckland international lounge will open its doors to travellers in August, taking design cues from the airline’s modern lounges in Los Angeles and also in Sydney, which began welcoming travellers across the weekend.
Following that, Air NZ’s smaller lounges in Brisbane, Melbourne and also Queenstown are next in line for a revamp as part of the kiwi carrier’s NZ$40 million (A$37.3 million) investment into its lounge network.
“What we want to do is progressively refresh all of our Australian lounges,” Air New Zealand’s Chief Sales and Commercial Officer Cam Wallace told Australian Business Traveller at the unveiling of the airline’s new Sydney lounge.
“Brisbane is the next of our Australian lounges to be refurbished and we’re just working with our suppliers on firming up the timeline … after Brisbane, it’ll be Melbourne,” Wallace added.
Across the pond in Auckland, construction works are very much underway on what will be an entirely new lounge: located one floor above the existing facility with 20% more room than available to passengers today, and won’t necessitate the use of a temporary lounge as in Sydney.
As a result “there will be less disruption for our incumbent customers”, Wallace continues. “We’ll close the doors on that lounge on, say, a Friday, and then start (in the new lounge) on the Saturday – it’ll be a smooth transfer.”
Qantas is also considering an upgrade for its Auckland airport lounge, with Qantas exec Kylie Morris telling Australian Business Traveller earlier this year that “we’re evaluating Brisbane right now and Auckland is also on our radar.”

Video of S-97 Raider first flight
S-97 Raider makes first flight

Sikorsky’s S-97 Raider rigid coaxial rotor prototype made its first flight from the company’s Development Flight Center at West Palm Beach, Florida, on May 22, testing the new design’s airworthiness in the low-speed flight environment.
The S-97 program’s chief pilot Bill Fell and co-pilot Kevin Bredenbeck flew N971SK for almost an hour, putting the Raider through a series of low-speed maneuvers with its pusher propeller disconnected, but turning due to friction.
“The rigid rotor system was rock-solid and provided a phenomenal amount of control,” said Fell.
“You very quickly make inputs in roll and in pitch and there’s no lag like a typical articulated rotor system. The aircraft responds immediately to your control input.
“We were able to march through the [flight test] card almost precisely like we did in simulation and get all of the data we desired.”
The first flight, which took place just shy of four years since Sikorsky last flew its X2 demonstrator, begins the start of a year-long, 100-flight-hour test program to expand to the Raider’s flight envelope. Sikorsky aims for the Raider to achieve a 220kt cruise speed while carrying weapons, be able to hover at 6,000ft on a 35 degree Celsius day and perform 3g maneuvers at speed.
Final assembly of the second S-97 prototype has begun at Sikorsky’s Development Flight Center. From early 2016, prototype two will serve as a demonstrator to offer customers an opportunity to experience the Raider’s capabilities first hand.
