A DELIGHTED Tony Popovic has hailed Western Sydney’s victory in the semi-final of the Asian Champions League as the club’s greatest achievement, topping two appearances in the A-League grand final and winning the Premier’s Plate.
Exulting in “a great night for this club”, Popovic paid tribute to the players “including those who left but helped get us here” as he looked ahead to the final against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia.
“Nothing beats this, this tops it all,” Popovic said when asked where making the final ranked among the club’s achievements. “Winning the ACL is the equivalent of winning the European Champions League for teams in Asia, and now we’re in the final, and it comes down to two teams.
“I know what these players can do, day in, day out. Due to the preparation they put in I have full faith in them. It’s fantastic for football in Australia, and we’re hoping this puts our game n the world map.
“FC Seoul have quality players, you don’t get to the final last year and then the semi without quality players. But I’m running out of words for my own players, who are still in pre-season.
“You look at Mateo Poljak, who’s had chickenpox and been in bed all week, Brendan Santalab who has had no playing minutes due to injury and suspension. It was a tremendous performance.
“In semi-finals the first goal can be crucial, though if they’d scored, it wouldn’t have changed our belief we could win the game. But the opening goal certainly changed the way Seoul approached the game, and in the end it was good to get the second one.”
FC Seoul coach Choi Yong-Soo paid tribute to Western Sydney, who he said he wanted now to lift the ACL trophy as the representatives of the East side of Asian football.
“We didn’t expect to concede a goal so fast – we lost concentration on the second ball from the corner, and the goal changed the game, the whole direction of it,” Choi said.
“We came here with many difficulties, a very tough schedule, and now of course we’re very disappointed. But we’ve enjoyed the campaign and I believe we have a bright future.
“Western Sydney are very competitive and have quality – defensively and offensively they are well organised. Now they are in the final and I hope they win it as they are representing this side of Asia.”
