BRASILIA: Recent results suggest that the Socceroos will be doing battle with one of the form teams in international football on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

Their undoubted pedigree aside, Brazil’s Seleçao are in the midst of a strong run of results, highlighted by their FIFA Confederations Cup triumph on home soil three months ago.

Last month’s loss to Switzerland was an exception to their otherwise impressive record in friendlies in recent years, a run that has included thrashings of China (8-0) and Iraq (6-0), on top of comfortable wins over Argentina, France and Mexico.

“I guess everybody plays football and dreams as a kid of playing against opposition of this quality,” said midfielder Tommy Oar.

“If you look at the names they have then it will be a fantastic experience just to play against opposition of that quality.

“It’s really exciting.”

Rather than daunted by the occasion, the Socceroos are relishing the atmosphere that awaits at the weekend.

72,000 spectators are expected to fill Brasilia’s Estadio Nacional Mané Garrincha on Saturday – a day where the Brazilian capital will come alive for the anniversary of the Independence of Brazil.

The Seleçao last played at Saturday’s match venue at June’s FIFA Confederations Cup, where they defeated Australia’s traditional regional rivals Japan 3-0.

“I think against any team you’re always going to get chances,” said key striker Brett Holman.

“I doesn’t matter how great or how world class any team is, they always give away chances and individually and the quality that they have, they’re phenomenal and they’ve got great players.

“But, we’ve got good players as well and they’re showing that in all the leagues they’re playing in.

“We’re going to get chances and, who knows, maybe we can cause a great upset.”

The Socceroos will play 2014 FIFA World Cup hosts and five-time FIFA World Cup winners Brazil at Brasilia’s Estadio Nacional Mané Garrincha on Saturday 7 September.

Kick off is at 4.15pm local time (Sunday 8 September, 5.15am AEST).

The match will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Sports 3HD and Fox Sports 3 from 5am AEST.
