“Over the past five Westfield W-League seasons we have seen the competition grow from strength to strength showcasing the best female footballers from Australia and also featuring players from 14 other countries around the world so far,” said De Bohun.

“This trend is set to continue and we are genuinely excited about the calibre of players and standard of football on offer for this coming season.

De Bohun predicted that the 2013/14 Westfield W-League draw would produce another season of great football entertainment.

“Last season’s epic Westfield W-League Grand Final at AAMI Park which saw Sydney FC defeat Melbourne Victory was a fantastic showcase of the competition,” said de Bohun.

“The new season draw has been developed in consultation with the clubs and we believe it’s fair and equitable within all the variables we have been dealing with.”

De Bohun said that Melbourne Victory is currently in the final stages of negotiations regarding venues for the season and a decision would be made soon.

A formal announcement regarding ABC TV’s broadcast of the Westfield W-League is expected shortly.

Tim Cahill out of Brazil friendly

Cahill out of Brazil friendly

Tim Cahill has pulled out of Australia’s friendly against Brazil on Saturday after suffering an ankle injury in MLS.

The 33-year-old Australian attacker injured his right ankle while playing for New York Red Bulls over the weekend and confirmed on Twitter on Monday that he would not join the Socceroos in Brasilia for their friendly international.

Cahill had initially cast doubt on his chances of travelling after Saturday’s match between the Red Bulls and DC United, having been substituted just before the hour-mark with an ankle injury.

And the former Everton attacker, who has scored 28 goals in 63 matches for Australia, made the decision to pull out of the Socceroos’ squad after the ankle did not respond quickly enough to treatment.

With Cahill having pulled out, Australia head coach Holger Osieck is expected to pick Josh Kennedy up front in Brasilia, while Central Coast Mariners striker Mitchell Duke would be a surprise selection.

Cahill was substituted in the 58th minute of the Red Bulls’ 2-1 home win over DC United after rolling his right ankle, following a tackle from visiting defender Dejan Jakovic in the first half.

Jakovic slid into Cahill in the lead-up to Lloyd Sam’s opening goal for New York after seven minutes and although the Australian played on to score the eventual winner in the 38th minute, he slammed the Canadian defender’s tackle after the match.

“Shocking tackle but there’s nothing I can do about it,” Cahill told soccerbyives.net.

Cahill’s goal was the Socceroos attacker’s eighth of the 2013 MLS season.

Joeys go down in semi-final

Joeys go down in semi-final

The Joeys have gone down on penalties to Indonesia at the semi-final stage of the AFF U-16 AYA Bank Championship in Myanmar.

The Australian’s held the lead twice in the match but couldn’t hold on as the game ended 2-2.

The game eventually went to penalties where the Indonesians made no mistake as they won 5-4.

Australia opened the scoring in the 31st minute when some brilliant work from Daniel Maskin down the left hand side saw him beat two defenders before setting up Jamal Reiners for a tap-in to give the Joeys a 1-0 lead that they would keep as the sides went to the half time break.

Gatot Wahyudi got the Indonesians level when he scored in the 56th minute before Kosta Petratos gave the Aussies back the lead on 67 minutes.

Petratos hit a brilliant free kick from just outside the box into the top right hand corner to give the goalkeeper no chance.

They couldn’t hold on however as Reska Maulana mimicked Petratos’s expertise at the other end as he lifted the ball over the wall and into the back of the net from a free-kick to get his side back to 2-2 with ten minutes remaining.

Neither side could get a winner in the final minutes and with no extra time the match went to penalties.

After Petratos converted the first for Australia, Reiners missed the second penalty, the only miss of the ten shots taken as the Indonesians booked their spot in the final.

The Joeys will now play Vietnam in the 3rd/4th place playoffs while Indonesia will take on Malaysia in the final.

Classic Matches | Del Piero demolishes Phoenix

Sunday, 1 September 2013 1:25 PM

Australia 1

You would find it hard to argue that anyone has set the Hyundai A-League alight in the same way that Italian football icon Alessandro Del Piero has.

Since he touched down on Australian shores the diminutive forward has caused havoc for rival defenders throughout the league.

This was none more so the case when Del Piero and his Sydney FC teammates claimed their biggest A-League victory to date.

The Wellington Phoenix headed across the ditch to face the Sky Blues in round 17 of the competition and were hoping an away victory could get them off the bottom of the ladder. It couldn’t have gone much worse though.

While Del Piero was the star it was new signing Joel Griffiths who got the scoring underway in the 11th minute after returning to the A-League from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Del Piero was given too much space in the midfield as he chipped through to Griffiths who put the game’s first goal under a sliding Phoenix goalkeeper Mark Paston.

The Italian maestro got his first on the 21st minute when a low cross fell to him in the box before he curled the ball into the left corner after beating his marker.

Two minutes on Sydney had an opportunity for their third when Andrew Durante cleared the ball from the edge of the box before bumping into Jason Culina.

The collision resulted in a contentious penalty as Del Piero stepped up to the mark to grab his second as Paston went to his left and the Italian to his right.

It was three goals in under six minutes as a bobbling Ali Abbas cross from the left wing found Jason Culina who drilled the ball from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner to have the score at 4-0

The best was yet to come though as Del Piero made his way into the box, faked to shoot to have his defender on the back foot and then curled it past Paston to earn himself his first A-League hat-trick.

5-0 down at the break the Phoenix couldn’t do any worse in the second half and held the Sky Blues out until the 70th minute when their nemesis struck again.

Del Piero showed superb control on the ball to beat Durante down the left before again sending the ball past Paston as the ADP show rolled on.

Ben Sigmund got Phoenix’s lone goal on 80 minutes as he rose above the Sydney FC defense to head home.

But the final word went to Sydney as substitute Yairo Yau completed the 7-1 demolition after a one-two pass found him wide open in the box.

Del Piero had four, the Sky Blues had their largest ever victory and the Phoenix had a night to forget.
