Beauchamp believes All Stars concept will grow

Saturday, 20 July 2013 11:12 PM

In a whirlwind week of sight-seeing, training and an epic clash with the All Stars, Manchester United created a spectacle that Australian football fans could only have dreamt of in years past.

Despite the 5-1 defeat for the Foxtel A-League All Stars side there is no doubt that football fans are keen to see more world class clubs grace our shores.

Western Sydney Wanderers captain and inaugural A-League All Star Michael Beauchamp believes the concept is definitely one that is here to stay.

“Having these EPL clubs out here is massive for Australian fans definitely and of course it will help to put Australian football on the map,” said Beauchamp.

“Hopefully this is only the beginning of something that can go on forever.”

After a record breaking A-League season, the 32-year-old believes that the ability to attract a side like Manchester United down under says a lot about the extent to which the competition has grown.

“It shows how far the A-League has come for us to get these types of sides out here.

“We can all walk away from tonight’s match with our heads high.”

With the debut of the All Stars now in the history books, Beauchamp expects there to be a big fight on the hands of all of the inaugural All Stars to keep their spots for next year’s side.

“Next year all the boys are going to be fighting harder to be a part of this squad.

“Matches like these give you the opportunity to play against quality players and you walk away with memories and that is what football is about.”

The attention now turns to Melbourne as the Victory have their moment in the global spotlight as they take on Liverpool at the MCG on Wednesday.

“The Victory boys now have a chance to play Liverpool which is another great match for Australian football.”

Osieck backs under-performing Australia

Sunday, 21 July 2013 8:39 AM

The Socceroos were under immense pressure throughout much of the contest during the East Asian Cup opener in Seoul, with only the heroics of goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic keeping them in it.

Osieck claimed the uneven nature of the match was a result of South Korea’s superior physical condition, and praised his team for coming away with a point despite spending so much time pinned in their own half.

“Korea played as I expected, a young, ambitious team, they had great pace, good technique and they definitely put us under pressure,” he said.

“But we must consider that their team is in the middle of the season, and their fitness was outstanding, whereas our boys have not played competitively for a couple of months.

“So I knew I would be very difficult for us, as our fitness wasn’t as good as it is normally. But I want to give full credit for the boys for character, effort and fighting spirit.”

The remarkable form of Galekovic will lead to suggestions the Adelaide United shot-stopper can challenge Mark Schwarzer for the regular number one shirt, and Osieck admitted he could now have a tough choice to make.

“I can only agree that Galekovic had a great performance, the way he played today put him in the frame,” he said.

“As I said before, this will be a good opportunity for me to look at players for the future and there were definitely some outstanding individual performance that gives me hope that some of these players can stay with the team and become contestants for a position.”

Osieck, who handed debuts to Mitchell Duke and Erik Paartalu, may now consider making more changes for the game against Japan on Thursday, but would not be pressed on which members of the squad will come under consideration.

“In these circumstances you just need to be realistic, you can’t expect a great performance from players who haven’t played in months,” he said.

“I have been with these boys for two and a half weeks, some of them were in the World Cup qualification camp, I know some of them very well as players and the others I am very close to them on daily basis and I know already who is in the position to play and who needs more time.”

Mark Milligan was withdrawn for Paartalu at half-time, with Osieck claiming the substitution was a precaution after the Melbourne Victory midfielder picked up a yellow card.

Dario Vidosic meanwhile limped out of the stadium suffering from a badly bruised leg, but is confident of recovering quickly.

Socceroos draw with Korea Republic

Saturday, 20 July 2013 10:06 PM

Eugene Galekovic produced an extraordinary display of goalkeeping prowess in Australia’s opening match at the EAFF East Asian Cup, singlehandedly earning the Socceroos an improbable 0-0 draw against hosts Korea Republic.

Led by newly installed coach Hong Myung-Bo – a hero of the 2002 World Cup as a player – the home side flew out of the traps at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Laying siege to Australia’s goal for all of the first half and much of the second, Korea Republic, cheered on by 31,000 passionate fans, did everything in their power to find the back of the net, but could not force a way past the inspired Galekovic.

Despite seeing his team earn a point, Australia coach Holger Osieck, who handed debuts to Mitchell Duke and Erik Paartalu, the latter off the bench, will take little encouragement from a performance in which the Socceroos struggled to mount a single meaningful attack.

The German will surely demand an improvement in his team’s second match against Japan on Thursday.

Hong meanwhile will be left to wonder how his impressive young charges, many of whom played under him for South Korea’s Under-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics, could not find a way past their stubborn visitors.

Having dominated the early stages, South Korea came inches away from opening the scoring in the 15th minute, when Galekovic was forced into a low save to deny Yun Illok.

Twice more in the next five minutes the hosts went close, as the Adelaide United custodian kept out Lee Seung-Ki and Yun again, the former from a long-range effort which appeared destined for the top left corner of the Socceroos’ net.

Next it was the turn of centre-back Kim Young-Gwon to threaten, forcing Galekovic into a flying save from a howitzer of a free-kick in the 29th minute.

As the minutes ticked away, the chances kept coming, but only at one end. On 37 minutes Kim Dong Sub sent a glancing header just wide of the post, and followed it up with another attempt soon afterwards, Galekovic this time fortunate not to spill the ball at his feet.

Fittingly, the last word of the first half went to Korea Republic, as the impressive Yun fired a cutback straight at the visitors’ inspired goalkeeper from just outside the area.

All Australia could muster was one driving run from Ryan McGowan, who played in Archie Thompson, but the Melbourne Victory man’s cutback went begging.

McGowan himself had the Socceroos’ only other chance of the half, sending a Dario Vidosic free-kick wide of goal.

Australia were afforded something of a breather early in the second half, as South Korea were restricted to half-chances from Go Yohan and substitute Yeom Kihun.

The oppressive humidity had a role to play as the tempo dropped on both sides, but the home side did not give up in their attempts.

Lee had arguably one of the best chances of the game in the 70th minute, denied only by the faintest of touches from the boot of Jade North.

Six minutes later they went even closer, Yeom striking the post with Galekovic finally beaten, indicating it was not to be South Korea’s night.

They must now dust themselves off and prepare for a clash with China at Hwaseong Stadium on Wednesday.

And it could be back to the drawing board for Osieck, who knows his team will not survive such a barrage unscathed again in the tournament.

Red Devils beat Foxtel All Stars

David Moyes has tasted victory for the first time as Manchester United manager as his side crushed the Foxtel A-League All Stars 5-1 at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

After their shock defeat to a Thailand All Stars side a week ago, the Red Devils weren’t going to be caught cold twice and gave more than 83,000 fans in Sydney something to remember with some wonderful goals.

And they might also have unearthed a new superstar with 20-year-old Jesse Lingard scoring twice, including a 20-metre stunner in the second half.

Danny Welbeck also finished with a brace, while Besart Berisha scored the All Stars’ only goal early in the second half after United led 2-0 at the break.

Star striker Robin van Persie played the final 30 minutes and capped his cameo with an assist and a late goal of his own with a powerful low drive.

It capped a superb night for the Red Devils who seem to be warming up nicely for the new English Premier League season under the new manager.

And Moyes, who took over from Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the last season, will be happy to have got more game time into some of his stars but will also relieved to get that first win under his belt .

United started full of purpose and they tested Ante Covic twice inside the first seven minutes.

First the All Stars keeper was well-placed to save Phil Jones’ header before using his body to keep out Welbeck’s low drive after he was put through by Lingard.

But on 11 minutes the visitors got their breakthrough, with Giggs winning the ball in midfield before passing to Welbeck who cleverly let the ball go through his legs and into the path of Lingard.

The young attacker took a touch before placing it well past a despairing Covic from just inside the box.

The All Stars almost hit back immediately when Thomas Broich was found by club-mate Berisha but his 25-metre strike flew just over Anders Lindegaard’s crossbar.

It led to the home side finally starting to get a good spell of possession but United were still dangerous, especially from corners with skipper Patrice Evra heading wide on two separate occasions.

Pedj Bojic finally forced Lindegaard into a save on 27 minutes after combining well with Broich but soon after United doubled their lead.

Lingard was the architect this time, running at the All Stars defence before finding Giggs who brilliantly played Welbeck into the box and the striker buried his shot into the corner of the net.

Welbeck should have had his second soon after when he broke through and rounded Covic but Michael Beauchamp got back to clear the goal-bound effort away to safety.

And the Englishman went even closer just before the break but again hit the ball straight at Covic before it rolled just wide of the far post.

It was the All Stars who came out firing after the resumption with Berisha pulling a goal back on 52 minutes.

The Brisbane frontman spun past his defender before his shot from the edge of the box beat Lindegaard at his near post.

But United’s response was swift and thrilling as Lingard got his second with the goal of the night.

Receiving the ball on the left-hand corner of the box, the youngster came back onto his right-foot before riffling an unstoppable shot into the far top corner.

Van Persie came on soon after and almost immediately had an assist, with his corner met perfectly by Welbeck whose glancing header gave Michael Theo no chance.

But the Red Devils weren’t done there with van Persie’s late strike putting the icing on the cake of a five-star performance.
